The Tradition of The Peabody Ducks & the March of The Peabody Orlando Ducks. What is it all about? Do ducks really march?

If you’ve never actually seen the twice-daily March of The Peabody Orlando Ducks, you’ll be understandably mystified, and we understand. Let us explain it here, but best of all, come visit the hotel any day of the week, 365 days a year, at 11:00 a.m. or 5:00 p.m. and see it for yourself. You’ll be amazed and amused.

For more information on the Tradition of The Peabody Ducks, click on “The Tradition of The Peabody Ducks” elsewhere in our Press Room.

The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks

Since the tradition began back in the thirties at our sister property, The Peabody Memphis, it was natural for The Peabody Orlando to acquire its own team of marching ducks. So, when our hotel opened November 1, 1986, a team of Peabody Ducks was flown in from Memphis, already trained, to perform the twice-daily marches. So began the progeny of The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks.

Since the hotel’s opening, The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks have performed their now world-famous march twice daily, 365 days a year, without fail. The ducks, like their counterparts in Memphis, march to the tune of John Philip Souza’s King Cotton March, and they never miss a beat.
From time to time, the ducks will perform a special march for corporate or association groups – for a fee – which is donated to the annual gala for Give Kids the World.

Of course, The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks have taken their role to new heights (they are migratory wildfowl, all), and are the hotel’s voice (or quack) for the conservation and preservation of North American migratory wildfowl, and don’t just live in a $100,00 marble and glass Royal Duck Palace, or frolic in a marble, orchid-crowned fountain in the atrium lobby to the oohs and aahs of hotel guests and visitors (the march is open to the public); The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks promote, in a loud and visual manner, the importance of all living creatures. They do so through the hotel’s outreach to elementary school programs, visits to retirement/assisted care facilities, and by attendances at the wildlife festivals under the auspices of the Federal Duck Stamp Office and the Department of the Interior.

The Peabody Orlando prides itself on its complete dedication to conservation and preservation of all species, and The Peabody Orlando Marching Ducks do a splendid PR job in propagating this message.

Which leads straight into our next story idea…

Duckiest Job in the U.S.A.

It is not often the position of Duck Master to The Peabody Ducks is vacant. But, two years ago, the position opened up and the advertisement elicited a virtual flood of applications from “wannabe” Duck Masters all over the world. The applications came in from Korea and Hong Kong, South America, The Netherlands, Hollywood CA., Seattle , WA., and from Canada .

The Wall Street Journal's cartoonists designed a Peabody Duck Master cartoon and ran it in the Employment Section of the paper. It depicts the duck fountain, Duck Master with ducks in tow on the red carpet. The hotel's phones and e-mail were jammed. CNN picked up the story as did the major national TV networks.

What are the qualities of a good Duck Master? The individual, man or woman, must love and respect all creatures and be especially good with children. The Duck Master also should be at ease with large crowds, and be able to conduct interviews with TV and print journalists. Duties include the care and wellbeing of the ducks, feeding and exercising. The Duck Master liaises direct with the Peabody Duck Farm where teams of Peabody Ducks are trained and given R+R after their 90-day stint at the hotel.

A good story with great photo opportunities.

The Wine Cellar at The Peabody Orlando

At The Peabody Orlando, Bacchus rules. Attend any of the hotel's monthly “wine pairing” events and the language du jour is definitely “du vin!” There is a shared passion for good wine among the culinarians, banquet and restaurant staff. This results in top quality and diversity of wines from the world's greatest wine-producing regions: from Sonoma and Napa to the rich fields of Burgundy in France , the sun-splashed Tuscan hills of Northern Italy and on to Australia and South Africa . So, it is not surprising that the bible of wine aficionados, The Wine Spectator, has honored The Peabody Orlando's Wine Cellar with its Award of Excellence for many years. The Wine Cellar, with its see-through, double-glazed doors and walls, brass trim and state-of-the-art temperature and humidity controls, straddles both Dux® and Capriccio Grill™. Whether dining at any of the hotel's specialty restaurants, or attending a gala banquet for 3,000, wines are always chosen with great care and served with style and panache…the perfect accompaniment to the most deliciously sensuous foods in Florida . A votre sante!

Peabody Convention Wisdom

When corporate or association America want to get down to business today, they are more likely to turn away from the grand, multi-facetted golf resorts, and instead, locating their important meetings and conventions at locations that do not have the temptations and lure of 72 holes of championship golf outside their delegates' guestroom door.

America's leading professional associations are expanding memberships and providing more and better member services, by locating their annual conventions, board meetings, retreats, workshops and training seminars in spacious, luxurious, urban or suburban modern convention hotels. The same is true for America 's pharmaceutical companies and other corporate entities. What's new in the meetings and conventions business today is not just location, location, location, but devotion, devotion, devotion to providing the atmosphere and structure to get company business done, smoothly and efficiently for the largest number of delegates.

“Orlando as a Cultural Destination” / “The Hotel of the Arts,” The Peabody Orlando

A great new, and unusual take on Orlando . Since 1996, The Peabody Orlando has been recognized as the spearhead of a movement to elevate Orlando 's performing and visual arts, history and heritage as a worthy element of the area's overall tourism product. With the foundation of the Orlando/Peabody Alliance for the Arts and Culture, (OPAAC), the hotel galvanized some 30 professionally run, not for profit arts organizations, and helped to bring nationwide publicity to “ Orlando as a Cultural Destination.”

The New York Times gave OPAAC the lead story in a double-page spread in the Business Section, quoting the hotel's Alan C. Villaverde, VP/GM on the importance of developing and nurturing cultural tourism since it is the fastest-growing segment of tourism in the U.S. and around the globe.
